Lionesses prepare celebration of local crafts
June 13th, 2014
The range and quality of products made by the many talented crafts people in our district will be on show at the Festival of Craft weekend, to be held on early next month.
The new event will be run by the Lioness Club of Motueka & Districts as a fundraiser for Motueka Plunket Society, but also to celebrate the work of local crafters.
It will be held at Memorial Hall on Saturday July 5th and Sunday July 6th from 10.00am to 4.00pm. The admission fee of $5 will include complimentary refreshments.
It won't be just a display of products, but also offers the chance for people to meet crafters and watch them demonstrating their skills. In some cases visitors will be able to try their hand, and certainly talk with the crafts people to learn more about how the products are made.
Stalls will be located on site in both the Memorial Hall and the adjacent Senior Citizens rooms.
One area will be devoted to the active Motueka craft group, the Crafty Tarts, who will be showing many of the outcomes of their regular "show and tell" sessions and peer-learning workshops. The idea of the group's stall is to let the public have a go at the various crafts that they have tried.
The Crafty Tarts also intend to show some of their work from a workshop they held recently for recycling/revamping of clothes from op shop clothing and fabric. They will also be raffling a "heart quilt" which the quilting sub-group of members have made.
The Motueka Men's Shed will also have a community corner, as will the display of various heritage items. The entries in the festival's Fascinator competition will be on display.
Other booths will look at fabric arts, flax weaving, mosaics, card making, floral art, plus demonstrations of spinning and weaving.
Of particular interest to many will be the display and voting for the photo best depicting "Our Place Motueka", the winning entry of which will be then be used for the front cover of the 2014/15 Motueka Phone Book, which is also produced by the Lionesses.
