Music project aims to tackle bullying
March 11th, 2014
[Press release]
A series of music workshops are about to get underway in Motueka, Richmond and Nelson with a focus on raising the awareness of bullying behaviours in our communities.
Participating young people will learn how to write and record music using computer-based software, and the songs that they develop will be compiled onto an 'anti bullying'-themed CD resource.
Music and lyrics are powerful mediums, used to connect and converse with all types of people. When used positively, music can be used as an effective learning tool to communicate key messages to the intended audience.
Local youth agencies including Job Track, ATET, Youth Nelson, The Nelson YMCA, Salisbury School, Canteen and St Barnabas have already signed up the workshops, which take place 25 March through to 10 April.
A series of after school music workshops are scheduled to take place, which are free to attend and open for anyone aged 12-20 years. Spaces are limited so bookings are highly recommended.
* Motueka: 25 March, 1 April, 8 April, 3.30 - 5.30pm, at SVS/Living Safe, 15B Courtney Street.
* Nelson: 26 March, 2 April, 9 April, 3.30 - 5.30pm, at Nelson YMCA, 156 Toi Toi Street.
* Richmond: 27 March, 3 April, 10 April, 3.30 - 5.30pm, at Richmond Town Hall, 9 Cambridge Street
The project is part of the Government initiated Te Punanga Haumaru campaign through Family and Community Services (FACS), which provides funding to support communities in developing strategies to address antisocial bullying behaviours.
The music project, named "Equaliser", is coordinated and managed locally by SVS - Living Safe and Relationships Aotearoa.
An album launch party is also to set take place in Nelson on the 24th May during Youth Week 2014. This will feature live performances from contributing artists. More details to follow.
