Volunteer painters gear up for next Motueka mural

The Vision Motueka murals team is preparing for the third in its series of nine large town murals telling the Motueka story to locals and visitors.

The crucial importance of horticulture to the Motueka way of life is the subject for the next mural, which will begin straight after Easter under the guidance of lead artist and local horticulturist Soo-Yir Lammers.

It will be painted on the southern wall of the Super Liquor building, and will be viewed directly by customers in the Z Energy forecourt as well as footpath users.

The group has already completed two murals over the past year - one depicting local Adventure Tourism and the other the History of Industry in Motueka. Both have drawn considerable praise from a wide cross section of people.

Soo-Yir has drawn the design, which will be blown up to a rectangle 3 metres high by 15 metres long. The section of wall to be painted will first need to be primed with a sealant and then the structural elements of the painting projected and marked on the wall.

Some parts of the painting will be detailed and accurate, but most of it will be simple block colours. This means that almost anyone who can hold a paintbrush will be able to contribute some time to the community project.

On the previous two murals an average of about 30 people helped for varying lengths of time and in varying ways, and their names have been painted below the murals.

The Vision Murals committee have the names and text numbers of most of the people who have indicated interest, and will soon be asking them if they can help. Senior students at Motueka High School are also being informed.

However, if any people (especially those with artistic ability or a desire to try and learn) who have not been approached would like to help, they should contact Linda at or Kahu at , or leave a message at the group's Facebook page, "Vision Murals Motueka".

Depending on weather and the number of helpers, it should take between three weeks and two months to complete the mural. Once again, Guthrie Bowron and Dulux are donating all the paints, and Tasman District Council has provided a Community Grant to pay for about half the costs.
