Work steps up on old church building

July 8th, 2014
[by David Armstrong]

The next use intended for the old Motueka Methodist Church, aka The Gothic, remains a mystery as the building continues to be remodeled behind a timber screen.

With repainting of the exterior completed earlier this year and some interior refitting, the site has been quiet until this week when the timber barrier was built and heavy engineering work heard from within.

The building began as the Methodist Church but became commercial premises after the Methodists and Presbyterians combined as the Uniting Church, housed at St Andrew's. Since then it has been put to a variety of uses, the most recently being the up-market Gothic restaurant.

Doubtless some readers will have inside information as to the next use of the building, but the rest of us will wait to see what surprises are in store.
