Colour rules at Festival of Crafts
July 5th, 2014
[by David Armstrong]
Motueka's Festival of Craft got off to a colourful start this morning, with a stream of visitors admiring the skilful work of a variety of local crafters.
Upon entering Memorial Hall, you are confronted with blazes of colour and materials on all sides. And at many of the stands crafters were at work and offering to show you how they make their products.
The festival is hosted by the Motueka Lionesses, with support from a range of craft groups in the district. Proceeds will go to the Plunket Society.
Two large craft groups - Motueka's Crafty Tarts and Mapua Creative Fibre - take up most of the left side of the hall, with members available to show their wares and demonstrate how they were made.
One particularly interesting stand, by local sewing machine expert Gary Hucker of In Stitches, has a range of sewing machines used over the past century, right up to the modern computer-controlled marvels.
The Lionesses themselves created the central piece - a period display of crafts from earlier days - as well as a row of miscellaneous crafts, many quite unusual, along the front of the hall.
The festival runs through Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Here are some photos taken on the opening morning.
