New officers step up for Historical Association

July 4th, 2014
[by Coralie Smith]

There were a few changes in office at the annual general meeting of the Motueka Historical Association last Saturday.

President Patsy O'Shea didn't stand and her place was taken by Tim Rich. Tim is a long time committee member and has represented us on the Motueka District Trust Board. He is well aware of some of the challenges that lie ahead.

Eileen Stewart stood down as Vice President but remains on the committee and will be our Museum rep. Betty Fry has taken on Vice President.

A local, Betty has been a member for about five years. She has been researching various geology sites for the U3A geology group which will come in handy for the historical group as well.

Secretary Coralie Smith continues in her position, as does long serving Treasurer Jennie Askew.

The committee has two new members in Maureen Dabinett and Allan Winslade, who join the other two hard working committee members Wendy McGregor and Eileen Thawley.

In her President's report Patsy thanked everyone for maintaining a strong and healthy group for us all to enjoy. This included "the members who ring to remind us of meetings, the ladies who supply and make afternoon tea, as well as the committee who organise the programme for the year."

The highlights for Patsy in her time as President "has been the production of two journals; the task of researching, writing and collating the articles having been interesting and rewarding." Patsy remains a member and will continue to contribute any way she can.

The Treasurer's report showed we are in good heart financially. The Research Room report spoke of the many people, who are not members of the group, that help us in doing tasks such as indexing, writing stories and researching local families and areas.

Some issues we are involved in and which were discussed in general business are the conservation of the Old Wharf, the Port Motueka Endowment Fund and how we feel this should be used for Motueka wharves, and the Motueka Library, with a view to having a historical room there.

As a last word Patsy concluded "I hope we can attract new folk along so that we remain a strong voice for heritage in this lovely town of ours."
