Art exhibition excels with vibrant colour

January 4th, 2014
[by David Armstrong]

A treat is in store for Motueka people and visitors to the town, with the opening last night of the annual art exhibition by local artists at the Chanel Arts Centre.

The exhibition will run until January 24th, and features over 200 paintings of various genres, all painted by members of the Motueka Art Group. All paintings are for sale, at a wide range of prices including a "bargain bin". Entry is free.

The Art Group comprises a mix of local professional artists and hobbyists who are encouraged and mentored to produce works for display and, hopefully, sale.

Most of the painters were at the opening drinks and nibbles last night, where the guest speaker was Glenys Della Boscoe, proprietor of Impressions Art Shop in Richmond (photo, right).

Glenys offered further encouragement to the district's aspiring artists, telling them of the standard frustrations and joys of the practice and inspiring them to keep working at it.

This writer has reviewed the past four exhibitions by the Motueka Art Group, and believes that this year's entries are at the highest standard yet. It would be difficult for a visitor to determine which were hobbyists and which were professional.

There seemed to be brighter colours used this year, making the displays very vibrant. There also seemed to be more paintings using local landscapes, and particularly beach settings, as their subject.

Here are photos taken of some of the artists beside samples of their work. If any artist would like the original version of their photo from the camera, please and ask it to be sent.
