Vision Motueka receives top community award
July 2nd, 2014
Vision Motueka won the top award in the Arts and Culture category of the Nelson/Tasman Trustpower Community Awards ceremony in Nelson last night.
About 110 community groups were nominated for awards in five categories, with Vision Motueka being the only Motueka group taking an award or commendation.
Vision Motueka chairman David Armstrong (photo right) and secretary Linda Glew were present to receive the award, which both describe as a total surprise. The $500 prize money will also come in very handy in maintaining the group's behind-the-scenes operations.
The citation read: "Winner of the Arts and Culture category is a group with a vision for their town, Vision Motueka.
This group is on a mission to promote their vision of Motueka as a vibrant, progressive, sustainable, healthy and resilient town - particularly for their children and future generations.
"Set up late in 2011 as an informal group, they have taken on a range of projects that help them realise their goal.
"Some of their successes to date include the two [now three] high quality murals telling the stories of Motueka, their first Community Christmas Dinner, which was attended by around 230 people and implemented with the help of 60 volunteers, and they ran their own Volunteers Awards.
"As well as this they have created a Motueka Music Network, helping musicians link with one another, and they have built an online database of contact details for all Motueka community groups, and they are promoting a positive and optimistic agenda for their town.
"Well done for taking the bull by the horn!"
David and Linda said it was disappointing to see such a small number (fewer than five) of Motueka groups nominated. Noteworthy was the number of successful groups in the Golden Bay area being nominated and receiving high awards.
"That's symptomatic of the Golden Bay community," commented Linda. "They're active and doing their very best to promote their area, and proud of what they're doing. Good on them!
"Motueka should be more like that. Next year Vision Motueka will actively encourage our active town voluntary groups to be nominated for awards."
David with Trustpower community relations manager Graeme Purches,
Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese and Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne.
