Most Motueka people oppose dam funding model

December 1st, 2014

Motueka followed Richmond and Takaka submitters in being overwhelmingly opposed to the proposed funding models for the Waimea Community Dam.

The hearings over the funding and governance models of the proposed dam came to in Motueka last Thursday, and as the Nelson Mail reported, not one of the speakers supported the model of a district-wide rate funding 30 per cent of the dam's construction cost.

Instead, they all argued that the major irrigators who would be the primary beneficiaries should bear the burden. Some submitters were relaxed about the district-wide rate funding be set at something closer to 10 per cent, or about $30 per ratepayer.

It appears that a small, yet influential group have convinced the TDC to promote the Lee Valley Dam as beneficial to the whole region. The region is far from convinced given the public response. The TDC's sponsorship of this proposal calls into question the judgement and leadership of the TDC.
