Operation Cover Up donations to go on display

August 1st, 2014
[by David Armstrong]

The time has come for the big Operation Cover Up open day showing all the knitted, sewn and crafted items made by Motueka people that will be sent to orphans in Eastern Europe.

Blankets, quilts and winter clothing, bedware and toys are destined for orphaned children struggling with daily life in Moldova, Romania and in particular this year the Ukraine, which still is struggling as a result of the political and military unrest there.

Operation Cover Up has been a long-running project run in Motueka as part of a New Zealand-wide effort through Mission Without Borders, a Christian charity. (See our story from two years ago.)

Faith Wells organised it for many years, and this year Helen Bisley and Val Nelson have stepped up to share the load.

The many thousands of products created by individuals, schools and community groups will be displayed again at the open day on Monday August 4th from 10am to 2pm at St Thomas' Anglican Church auditorium.

The items are then packed and sent to Nelson, then on to Christchurch to be combined with items from the South Island into a container ship bound for Holland. The North Island does likewise.

The recipient orphanages look after 10,000 children in Moldova, 80,000 in Romania and 100,000 in Ukraine, all of whom were orphaned following civil wars and persecution in their countries and have to survive bleak winters with little warm clothing.

One huge community contribution is 25 individually designed and sewn quilts, made over the past four months by up to 12 members of the local craft group Crafty Tarts.

Here is a photo taken with most of the contributors draped in some of their products, accompanied by their supervisor and mascot, Chloe the cat.
