Talent quest reaches another high standard

May 31st, 2013
[by David Armstrong]

Judging by the performances at Motueka High School's Talent Quest 2013 held to an overflowing audience last night, Motueka indeed does have talent, and plenty of it.

Another successful running of this event left the 500-strong audience with smiles on their faces, having heard some great singing and instrumental playing and seen lots of energetic and skillful dancing and laughed through the improvised humour.

To an elderly reviewer like me, this is a quantum leap beyond the talent quests I took part in when I was their age. We were timid and unadventurous; these students have confidence, ability and poise by the trailer-load.

I will not attempt to critique all the acts, but simply provide the list of winners and what decent photos could be obtained. But I do also want to heap praise on the organising team, the light and sound crew, and the comperes.

Previous talent quests have tended to be rather long affairs, but this year 27 acts were included in the finals after rounds of heats, and the stage crew made sure there were no embarrassing gaps. And after a few very early hiccups, the visual and sound presentation was superb and of very high quality.

The three MCs, Jacob ("Give it up!") Linn, Harry ("Rapper") Townsend and Izaak ("Not now mum") Behringer worked tirelessly with their cheerful patter and showed their musical skills as well, especially with their hilarious Variety act "Bromance".

And a final thumbs-up for the school's Theatre Sports group who filled the gap while the judges conferred with their very fast-thinking, clever improvised games that had the audience in raptures.
