Weather affecting Freeview picture quality

January 30th, 2013
[by David Armstrong]

If your Freeview terrestial TV viewing has been patchy in recent days, don't start blaming your TV unit or set-top box. Instead, blame the current string of warm days.

The large and intense high pressure weather system sitting over New Zealand is affecting the distribution and transmission of Freeview signals in many parts of the country, including Motueka. However, those receiving their Freeview signal via satellite are not affected.

Installers use abseiling skills to position cellphone transmitters in Hickmott Place

The transmission provider JDA has had to switch to a back-up link. To lessen the impact of these atmospheric conditions in future, JDA is now upgrading the Nelson transmission link.

Adrian van Vught, of Satellite Networks in Motueka, says the Freeview HD service has been "playing up quite badly at the moment, channels have been missing, and the ones that are there keep on breaking up".

2 Degrees upgrades coverage

Meanwhile, there are other changes in the Motueka air. The mobile phone provider 2 Degrees is currently installing hardware on the Hickmott Place transmission tower to provide full coverage for the town.

Local transceivers are being attached around the tower, along with two transmission dishes pointed at Mt Campbell.

A workman on the site said it was expected the equipment will be in use by the end of this week.
