Vandals despoil War Memorial wreaths
April 28th, 2013
The wreaths laid at the War Memorial on Anzac Day have been vandalised. Coralie Smith saw them during her morning walk this morning in Pah Street this morning.
"Makes you spit. Vandalism rather than protest against war, I would say," she said in an email sending these photos.

How awful to see the damage to the wreaths. Regretfully there is a spate of mindless vandalism occuring in this vicinity of late. Damaged signage, broken windows and wrecked fencing, all in the past few weeks. Shame on the perpertrators.
The police advise that it is only by all of these incidents being advised to them that those responsible might be identified. Even if the damage is deemed to be small I urge residents to make the call.

Damage to the wreaths at the War Memorial is among the worst of desecrations. One must suppose that such is done by wanton disregarders of anything right and proper, and is an intended contempt for those who fought and who perished, and for their families, and for our whole society. Such offenders need serious correction in their thinking, for if they do this, they are also capable of all sorts of abuses.
If identified and prosecuted we may hope that they might be vigorously prompted to repair themselves. Actually however I am in favour of severe punishment. But, just a thought, it wasn't wild weather, was it, that might have damaged the wreaths?
