Stone mats the latest crafty skill

March 26th, 2013

A dozen more stone mats now adorn Motueka doorsteps and tabletops, following a creative workshop run by Crafty Tarts yesterday to learn the technique.

The workshop, the second this year in a varied programme being run by the local crafts-sharing group Crafty Tarts, involved 12 women learning from Babs Walker how to use a collection of flat river stones, glue and a base fabric of outdoor carpet to make the mats.

Most chose a size suitable for external doorways, while a few made smaller table mats to place under hot dishes. The class took a bit over two hours to complete their creations, most of which can be seen in the photo below.

The craft group has been rapidly building in size, and includes some people with special skills that they want to pass on, as well as beginners keen to learn what takes their fancy.

The numbers have been growing to the point that the monthly meetings had to be expanded to twice monthly, with every second one being a workshop for a particular skill or type of product.
