Working group set up for employment initiative
September 25th, 2013
A core working group has been set up to address the perceived problem of creating or enabling jobs for Motueka youth (see our earlier story).
The 'Jobs for Youth' core group met for the first time early this month and plans to meet fortnightly for now. The group includes Tara Forde (TDC candidate), Maihi Barber (Te Awhina Marae), Dave Moloney (BNZ Motueka manager), Kathryn Beatson (High school Gateway co-ordinator) and youth worker Carl Chapman.
The name for the project is "Stepping Stone". Carl says they have decided the work is more than just jobs for youth, although that would be the cornerstone of the project. Another possible name for the project is "Empowering Youth".
"We are looking to assist young people from the age of 15-25 years old," Carl says. "Initially we will fully explore the problem or problems before looking for solutions."
At an earlier community meeting on the topic, attendees were asked the question "what are some of the challenges facing young people on the verge of leaving school?" Speakers came up with a huge number of hurdles, but also found there were many very good resources in this region available to assist young people in to gainful employment.
Carl am looking for funding to enable him to work on this initiative as a full time coordinator, "so I can really get my teeth in to it". He asks that if anyone has ideas to help, to contact him by email at .
