Student art to welcome Motueka visitors
August 25th, 2013
[by David Armstrong]
Three Motueka High School students may soon see their art designs permanently on show for visitors to the town in the form of welcoming entrance signs depicting the area's attractions.
As an art project for a Year 10 class, students sketched out ideas for big welcoming signs on entrances from Lower Moutere, Motueka Valley and Riwaka. This was in response to a request by Sue Clark, representing Keep Motueka Beautiful, for a town beautification project.
The variety of ideas were narrowed down to the best three, which are now being prepared for digital imaging by Andy Lowe of Image Creators onto 2.4m x 1.2m signs.
The three students whose work gained the thumbs up by Sue and Keep Motueka Beautiful were Tess Haunch (for the sign to be placed between RDA and the airport), Hannah Gordon (the sign in Lower Moutere) and Georgia Elliston (the sign on the town approach from the SH60 bridge).
Relevant themes - the activity at the airport, orchards at the Moutere Highway entrance, and the river for the northern approach - were highlights of the design. See the photos below.
On Friday the designs were handed over to Andy for digital processing and placement on the sign boards. Andy spent some time with the students explaining how aspects of their work, such as the amount of space around them and the depth and strength of the colours, would be improved to make them easily readable for motorists.
The girls' art teacher Ben Mills said he appreciated the opportunity for the students to create something that would enhance the attractiveness of the town.
Project leader Sue Clark said it was great that the girls would know their contribution will be seen and appreciated by visitors for years to come.
Andy is doing the production work for free, the cost of materials being the only charge at around $700 each, which will be paid by Keep Motueka Beautiful.
The final step will be to get the relevant consents from TDC (for two signs) and NZTA for the one on SH60.
