Floods lead to water and shellfish warnings

April 25th, 2013
[from TDC press release]

The recent floods have caused Tasman District Council to issue warnings about Motueka's drinking water and possible shellfish contamination in our coastal area.

Due to the heavy rainfall over the last several days, there is a large plume of contaminated water extending out from the Motueka River mouth.

In addition, the rainfall has caused an overflow from the Motueka Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Because of the overflow at the plant there is an increased risk of shellfish contamination, particularly from the coastal areas from Motueka River mouth to Kaiteriteri.

People are advised that shellfish should not be taken for consumption for a period of 28 days from today from this area. The area will be assessed throughout the ban period.

People are reminded that after any heavy rain where there is discoloration of the water people should not swim due to the increased risk of infection.

And we already have in place official advice that people on Motueka's reticulated water supply should boil their water before drinking or cooking, and people with private bores should also take similar precautions until the water table normalises.

Update (April 27): The boil water notice has now been lifted.
