Plan to remove and recycle obsolete TV sets

Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council are doing their bit to ensure unwanted televisions are recycled responsibly.

Both Councils will be providing subsidised television recycling drop-off sites from 22 April, as part of a regional initiative.

In the first months of the programme it will be delivered as part of the Government's TV TakeBack programme, which coincides with New Zealand's switch from analogue to digital television.

From 22 April, Tasman residents can recycle unwanted televisions at Richmond, Mariri and Takaka Resource Recovery Centres. In addition, a number of local retail outlets are accepting TVs for recycling from 25 March, and the Councils congratulate them on their participation. People do not need to buy a new TV to go digital and the Councils encourage people to re-use TVs wherever possible. However, any unwanted televisions must be disposed of responsibly with participating retailers or designated drop-off sites when they open.

Councils are supporting this initiative as televisions contain heavy metals that can be harmful if released into soil or waterways. Longer term both Councils will be looking at a sustainable solution to the recycling of e-waste, and support the development of a product stewardship approach, where manufacturers and retailers are actively involved.

The subsidised $5 fee (down from $25 currently) will apply for the first 4,300 TVs collected at Council locations from 22 April. Fees at retailers will be also be $5 per television, and in some instances will not apply when buying a new television.
