Motueka's population growing at 1% a year

The populations of both the Motueka township and the surrounding settlements have increased by an average of just on 1 per cent per year since the 2006 census, figures released by the Department of Statistics show.

The official resident population of Motueka as recorded in the census conducted in March this year was 7,593, up 6.5% from the 7,125 recorded in the previous census seven years earlier.

Counting all of the wider Motueka area, including Kaiteriteri, Riwaka and outlying districts but not Upper Moutere or Mapua, the population is 13,383. This is about 7% higher than in 2006.

The breakdown by statistical area as shown on the Department of Statistics' website is as follows:

Motueka West (of High Street): 3,669 (was 3,414 in 2006)
Motueka East: 3,924 (3,711)
Riwaka: 870 (849)
Jackett Island: 12 (3)
Kaiteriteri: 789 (735)
Motueka Outer: 4,119 (3,813)
