Tasman Community aims to buy Kina Reserve
August 23rd, 2013
The community of Tasman village and Kina, with Tasman District Council, are bidding to purchase and save from commercialisation Kina Reserve, also known as Lee Baigent Memorial Domain.
They are appealing for anyone who has "ever loved or enjoyed Kina peninsula" to help them buy the controversial reserve land back for the community.
The land has recently come up for tender, and the community tender organisers say this is "a last chance after more than two years of fighting to have this land returned to the public - since Carter Holt Harvey (CHH) has put a gate in place to block access to the public".
They say CHH has put proposals forward to cut up the land a sell as private housing developments.
"There have been thousands of hours spent in the environment court, at meetings and 1000s dollars on legal fees, trying to stop this from happening. We now have a last chance opportunity to purchase this land to give back to the public," they say on their Facebook page, 'Save Lee Baigent Memorial Domain Kina Tasman NZ'
Over the last couple of weeks a proposal has been put together and money put forward in large amounts from many local families all trying to raise a large enough sum to win the tender.
"Now with the legalities coming together and the tender closing in less than a week, we are calling for as much community support as possible.
"We need to see as many names and as many dollars as possible from anywhere in the world rolling into the TACA (Tasman Area Community Association) bank account.
"To have a good chance of winning the tender and securing public access to this land for recreational use, for many generations to come we need to raise this money together."
The TDC and TACA will put forward their tender on Tuesday night so money needs to be cleared Monday night (26/8/13) into the TACA account at the latest. The Community's contribution target is $50,000 minimum.
If the tender in not successful, all money will be returned to the donors. For the ease of the treasurer, a minimum donation of $50 would be most appreciated. The bank account details are: TACA - Westpac, .
