Popular reading programme to trial ballot

The free annual summer reading programme at Tasman District Libraries has proved so popular that a ballot system is being trialled this year to give parents more time to register their children.

Online applications to enter the ballot for The Summer Beach Read open at 9am on Monday 2 December and close at 9am Monday 9 December.

"In past years we've had a first-come-first-serve based registration which has put huge pressure on the library staff and more recently on our website, as hundreds of parents rush to get their child a place," says Glennis Coote, Tasman District Libraries Manager.

"We know there's a high demand for the places we can offer throughout the district but we want everyone to have a fairer chance. We are hoping this ballot system will be the answer."

Children aged 5-12 years sign a contract to read for at least 15 minutes every day, fill in a reading log and visit the library three times to talk to library staff about what books they've read and are also helped to discover new ones.

Now into its thirteenth year, the successful reading programme will have another change - check-ins at the library won't start till after the Christmas break on Monday 6 January.
