Street Ambassadors return for summer safety
November 22nd, 2013
[TDC press release]
The Tasman Street Ambassador Service is about to get underway for the summer season, with experienced youth workers having a presence on the Richmond and Motueka CBD streets between 8.30pm and 2.30am on Friday and Saturday evenings.
The service is provided by the not-for-profit youth organisation HYPE-GS. Supported by the Nelson YMCA, HYPE-GS have been involved in the safer streets initiative since 2010.
Based in Richmond on Fridays and Motueka on Saturdays, the mobile service also reaches out to outlying communities to assist with regional events working in partnership with the police, night patrol, and Maori Wardens to ensure Tasman communities are kept safe and young people party responsibly.
The Tasman Street Ambassador Service is supported by the Tasman District Council and Mayor Richard Kempthorne is grateful for the role the street ambassadors play in the community.
“The Tasman Street Ambassadors have a very good ability of relating to our young people who are out and about," he says.
"They are never going to be able to be everywhere all the time, but by working in partnership with the other agencies, they are able to react proactively to situations, and often prevent unnecessary harm and disorder from escalating."
The service runs from 29 November through until 15 February.
