Sirens to compete at roller derby nationals

October 22nd, 2013
[Press release]

Nelson-Tasman based roller derby team Sirens of Smash will be competing over Labour weekend in their first excursion to the Roller Derby nationals.

Sixteen teams from around the country will battle it out in Palmerston North at the 'Derby Royale' for the national title. This will be the first time that the Sirens of Smash will attend the national competition, after establishing roller derby in Nelson-Tasman in the beginning of 2010.

Since then, they have gone from strength to strength with regular games in Nelson, a strong travel team, and an upcoming freshmeat bout on November 23rd.

Team captain Kellie Dore'en (aka Kelfa Leather) says, "We have been training hard for this tournament and it is an amazing opportunity to show the rest of the country how far we have come and represent Nelson-Tasman at a national level.

"We are a strong and fit team and are going into this competition at the top of our game. The weekend will be awesome, roller derby has inspired and empowered woman all over the country and this weekend we get to hang out with them."

Associate Captain Cherie "Credit Crunch" Drummond said it was particularly exciting to see three new Sirens debuting at the tournament, and the team was aiming for a top eight finish. Cherie says, "We're looking forward to some challenging competition and surprising the opposition with the Siren's intensity and pace."

The club was successful in gaining sponsorship from many local businesses who helped them to get to Nationals. Local businesses sponsored pages in a calendar of scenic Nelson spots with your favourite derby girls in. This calendar will be available for sale soon at selected outlets.

You can find the Sirens of Smash Roller Derby on facebook, or keep an eye out for future bouts at the Tahunanui Skating Rink.
