Op shop clothing the focus for fundraiser
August 22nd, 2013
Creative redesigns of recycled clothing will be showcased at the Op Shop Fashion Show, a major fundraiser for the restoration of the historic St Andrews Church in two weeks.
The event will feature a wide range of models from young teenagers up to retirees who will take to the catwalk wearing up to three outfits obtained from Motueka's op shops and subsequently either modified or re-assembled to suit new purposes.
Clothing has been sourced from the Salvation Army's shop in Greenwood Ave, the Hospice Shop in High Street and the Red Cross shop at Community House.
The outfits will come under sections that include casual, working life, evening/party, professional, fantasia and designer. Some outfits will be for sale at the end of the event.
Up to 40 outfits and about 12 models will be on parade, including some people - such as the St Andrews minister Rev Peter Norman - who are normally seen in other very different roles.
A member of the St Andrews Church parish, Rankeilor Arnott, is the driving force behind the fashion show, and she has been assisted by Liz Salt, who will be the MC for the evening, and Val Armstrong, who is managing the decorations and the entertainment.
The show will be held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday September 7th starting at 7.30pm. Mark Wentworth will manage the all-important lighting and sound. The Crafty Tarts craft group is making some special decorations, and high school students have two innovative dance routines for entertainment.
St Andrews Church, beside the Police station, has been deemed unusable due to earthquake risk, and money is being raised in to help pay for the required engineering and strengthening work, expected to cost in the six-figure range.
