Weekend quakes provide timely reminder
July 22nd, 2013
[TDC press release]
While not directly affected by the quakes rattling Wellington and Marlborough over the past 48 hours, it was not lost on many Tasman citizens the epicentre of the majority of the quakes was not that far away.
The people of Wellington and Marlborough have our support and understanding as they wake up after a weekend of shakes, says Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne.
"The subject of earthquakes is always at the top people's minds in the capital, but talk is never the same as the real thing. It is appropriate we give the city an opportunity to regroup and assess the damage which will only be visible in the light of day.
"We also need to recognise some members of our community have relocated here from Christchurch and for those people the weekend earthquakes would be unsettling and we need to be aware some will be nervous.
"Our own community has been shaken up and provides a timely reminder to 'be prepared' because as the weekend shows we will not get much of a warning.
"While Tasman has a proven community resilience it is also an opportunity to connect with our neighbours and local community so we are in a good position to support each other in need. "
