Network to connect and promote musical Motueka

March 22nd, 2013
[by David Armstrong]

Calling music teachers and performers in the Motueka area. A web-based network is being set up to connect and promote the town's abundant musical talent and to showcase the music scene in Motueka.

Motueka is well known for the quality and range of musicians based locally, and the community development group Vision Motueka is mounting a web-based project to connect them more effectively.

The idea came from mother of three Eugenie Piozin-Belloir (pictured right), who was finding it hard to locate a suitable music teacher for her eldest child. She approached Vision Motueka with her idea of a website that would profile all music teachers in the area and eventually form a supportive network of local musicians.

The project committee is led by Eugenie, and includes Vision Motueka members Thuy Tran and Jarmo Saloranta, local website creator Andre Ismael and Motueka High School head of music Hilary Sinclair.

They now have design ideas for the website and have begun an email offer to music teachers and performers to be part of a teachers' directory on the site, in exchange for a small donation.

Already a few teachers have entered their details, and organisers are urging others to take a few moments to fill out and email the forms detailing their interests, offerings and contact details, including - if they wish - a short profile article about them.

Andre is the designer of the state-of-the-art Our Town Motueka website as well as classy sites such as the one promoting the Luminate festival. He is offering his services to Vision Motueka at a heavily discounted fee. The cost of developing the website will be met entirely from donations and a grant.

They aim to have the website developed and ready to view by June, but only if a good number of musicians, teachers and performers have submitted their details.

Eugenie says the aim of Motueka Music Network is to grow as "an informal network of people living in and around Motueka who play, teach or learn any form of music, or who entertain or host music events".

She says the aims of the website are:

  • To create a database of all music teachers (of all genres), facilities, venues and events that are available in and around Motueka, enabling people interested in learning music, using facilities or attending events to easily find the information they need.
  • To enable and encourage all teachers and promoters of music to network more effectively with each other.
  • To help music facilities in the town to be used more efficiently.
  • On occasions, to mount musical events or festivals.
  • To promote Motueka as a community with a strong musical culture.

Motueka is well known for its involvement in and support for music over a wide range of genres. Its schools and several community groups are active in fostering young and established talent, and performances by top-flight entertainers of all types feature regularly among public events around town through the year.

This is obvious to anyone who has seen Hilary working with our young musicians and choirs, especially those who attended the Youth Concert last year.

Vision Motueka says this project is an inexpensive but effective way of strengthening community ties and building on Motueka's human capital, and is a great example of how community-led developments can benefit the town.

Any musicians or music teachers who have not been approached about the network and website, and who would like to be part of the network, or to donate a small amount to help get the website started, can email Eugenie at or to visit the Motueka Music Network Facebook page (which, note, is not the final network website).
