Quilting exhibition to benefit St Andrews church rebuild

January 22nd, 2013
[by David Armstrong]

A quilting exhibition by local expert craftswoman Bev Dyke will be a great fundraising start for a programme to rebuild or strengthen the St Andrews Uniting Church after the building was condemned as being an earthquake risk.

Bev is mounting the display at Tapawera Area School gymnasium as part of the New Zealand Motorhome Association's annual musical get-together on the first weekend of February.

Around 70 of her exquisite quilts will be shown, including the one pictured here,

The "Music in the Mountains" rally has become a highlight for the motorhome group, with hundreds of enthusiasts meeting to socialise and enjoy the musical acts.

In recent years these weekends have included some kind of arts or crafts exhibition for fundraising. Last year several thousand dollars were raised for the Cancer Society.

The vice president of NZ Motorhome Association is Motueka resident Peter Gordon, and he has worked to ensure these fundraising activities continue, and this year he wanted to do another quilt show.

Meanwhile, Bev Dyke last year had been planning to mount an exhibition in St Andrews Church, but that was scotched when the church was condemned and fenced off, out of bounds. (See our story here.) The Church's Parish Council are still deciding whether to build a new building in its place or to re-engineer the existing building up to earthquake standards.

So Bev jumped at the opportunity to have her exhibition at the Tapawera rally and give the proceeds to help start the church's rebuild fund. The exhibition will be open from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd February, 10am - 4pm. A gold coin donation is requested.
