Youth band tour returns for another year

The Tasman Band Tour returns to the region, with three all-ages music gigs taking place in Richmond, Motueka and Golden Bay over consecutive weekends in June.

The tour kicks off in Richmond on Saturday 1st June, hosted by the Club Waimea, before moving on to Motueka and the newly refurbished Motueka Memorial Hall on Saturday 8th June, and concludes in style in Golden Bay on Saturday 15th June with a grand finale show at the Pohara Hall. All shows run from 8-11pm, are all-ages, alcohol free and free to attend.

The tour provides up and coming youth bands with an opportunity to perform in a series of live shows across the district. The three gig concert series also offers a creative outlet for young people to contribute towards making their communities vibrant, happening places.

The line up has a familiar look about it, with The Black Spots (Garin College, Golden Bay High School) , Buried in Blood (Motueka High School), Paper City (Nayland College/Garin College), Fire Without Permit (Waimea College) and Black Water (Waimea College) all returning for a consecutive tour of duty. The reformed 'Little Ocean's', who have tasted international success as the critically acclaimed 'Recommended by your Mom' will once again headline the bill. Element Six (Waimea College) round out the line up, making for a diverse range of pop, rock, metal and electronic genres to be represented on stage throughout the tour.

As well as the pride and prestige associated with playing music in front of their peers, participating bands will also have the opportunity to learn alongside music and event professionals to develop their skills in setting up, running and mixing sound and lighting equipment. The 'Live Sound & Show Production workshops' are made possible via a Ministry of Youth Development funding grant.

Tasman District Council Community Recreation Officer Paul McConachie says the Tasman Band Tour offers a great opportunity for bands to hone their skills in front of a live audience.

"There are a lot of talented young musicians out there who are restricted to shredding guitars and bashing drum kits in the confines of parent's basements and rehearsal spaces."
