Community board submits wish-list for TDC annual plan
May 21st, 2013
[by David Armstrong]
A Motueka-based contractor to carry out much of the Council's simple maintenance programmes and minor capital works was one of the recommendations made by our community board for TDC's 2013-14 annual plan.
The board said this would include rubbish collection, street cleaning, and mowing and maintenance of playing fields by a local business would save Council the high cost of regular travel from Richmond or Nelson.
In their submission, they also advocated firmly for annual allocations to the Motueka ward of:
- $25,000 for up to 1 kilometre of new footpaths, and another $25,000 for footpath rehabilitation,
- $50,000 per year for kerb and channels (for roughly 1km built), with the first suggested locations being Hursthouse Street, Lodder Lane and School Road / Green Tree Road (Riwaka), and
- $25,000 for cycle lane marking on approved streets in Motueka township.
The board expressed concern about Council stepping back from its earlier plans to refurbish the lower Motueka River stopbanks. Following several public meetings regarding flood control during 2011 and 2012, it was expected that Council's recommendations for a project costing $15m - $20m. Instead, the budget was reduced to $5m without detailing how this was to be spent.
Instead, Council's draft annual plan is promoting $30,000 to be spent on further investigation and consultation on how the $5m should be spent. The community board said this was unnecessary because this had already been done and Council already has the information it needs.
The board urged that the deferment loan-funded $753,487 proposed in the Long Term Plan must be reversed and the expenditure approved, as protection against flooding is "essential and urgent".
Among the six-page submission, two minor suggested Reserves projects that will be of interest for many residents were:
- a series of flower beds as a "minor Botanic Garden" in Decks Reserve to enhance the historic plaques,
- an all-weather walkway / cycleway along the Trewavas Street Foreshore Reserve from Old Wharf Road to the Port Motueka entrance.
