Motueka hosts national aero club championships

February 20th, 2013

The skies over Motueka will be buzzing for the next few days as the Motueka Aero Club hosts the Royal New Zealand Aero Clubs' national championships.

Those individuals and teams taking part will have competed at the five regional rallies, which were held about November, with the winners qualifying to compete at the National Championships held the following February.

RNZAC competitions include precision flying, aerobatics, life raft dropping, formation flying, bombing, navigation and streamer cutting. Expect to see plenty of these through until Saturday.

One competitor, John Wilkinson who flew in from Ashburton this morning, said Motueka is an excellent place to hold the championships.

"It has good weather, a good airfield, great sightseeing in the area, especially around the bay, and the hospitality is great," he said. "And it's central to all the New Zealand aero clubs."

Flying New Zealand promotes the development of the flying skills of its affiliated members by running the RNZAC competitions for pilots at all levels, from trainee to the seasoned commercial pilot.

Competitions have been developed over the years and at National level include trophies donated by, or in the memory of, some of our country's earliest aviators and dignitaries.

The Wings international competition between New Zealand and Australia is held each year with some of the winners of the RNZAC National Championships competing.
