Extra activities this year for Children's Day

February 20th, 2013
[by David Armstrong]

A range of creative activities, along with a repeat of last year's big family Pool Party, have been organised this year to celebrate Children's Day in Motueka.

The Pool Party, held behind Parklands School, was a big hit last year. This year it has been expanded a little to include puppet shows and several sports activities as well as the usual games, races, bouncy castle, sausage sizzle and give-away goodies. Plus, of course, swimming in the pool.

Children's Day is on Sunday March 3rd and is celebrated in most centres around New Zealand.

The local organisers - Vision Motueka and Strengthening Families with the help of the Family Service Centre and local groups - have added four events at different times on Saturday March 2nd, to provide a selection of other activities that smaller numbers of kids and their parents will enjoy together.

The theme for Children's Day (Te R? O Te Tamariki) is "Treasure our Children", encouraging parents to do something special for the small people in their lives.

As a prelude to the Sunday party, Children's Day events will start on Saturday morning at 10am at the top of the Motueka sandspit.

There, parents and their children can build sculptures made of sand, stones and driftwood until 1pm, with the help of volunteer supervisors from the Motueka Arts Council.

Meanwhile, at Decks Reserve beside i-SITE, from 10am to noon children can enjoy clay play and modelling with Johnna of Little Picassos.

For those preferring more passive pursuits, the Motueka Library has storytelling and activities for 4 to 10 year olds starting at 11am.

Or for a really novel adventure into creativity, families can go down to the Community Gardens in Old Wharf Road from 12.30pm to 2.30pm to make their own scarecrows.

On Children's Day itself, Sunday 3rd March children at St Thomas and St Andrews Churches can enjoy stories and morning tea at their usual family service times.

But the big celebration will be from 10.30am to 1.30pm at the giant Pool Party behind Parklands School, with non-stop fun and activities. Access to the pool is from behind Whitwells on High Street or Talbot Street.
