Motueka youth worker to lead music project
November 18th, 2013
Youth band and solo artists are sought to take part in a music project to create a CD of music which is themed to providing positive role modelling and eliminating all forms of bullying.
The Youth Music Project manager is Paul Johnson, a youth worker at Stopping Violence Services - Living Safe based in Motueka. He is passionate about music and is a DJ and player of African percussion instruments.
Young People from youth, school and community groups across the Nelson Tasman region are invited to unite and contribute original tracks for the project CD.
The CD will be themed around positive role modelling and eliminating bullying in all forms from society. As part of the Government-initiated Te Punanga Haumaru / Anti-Bullying Project, the aim is to create a resource whereby the songs and sleeve notes of the CD hold valuable information in dealing with bullying.
Organisers say that through music and lyrics the project is designed to challenge disruptive, antisocial bullying behaviours and empower our young people to take a stand against these attitudes.
Bands and musicians will be involved in recording their original songs (one song per band/musician chosen). They will learn about music production and CD art work design, and have an experience in a professional recording studio.
They will have the opportunity to play live at the official launch of the CD during Youth Week 2014, to be held over May 17th - 25th.
Paul is very excited to be working on this project with local youth. He has seven years’ experience working with young people through SVS-Living Safe. He believes that music offers our young people a very real, tangible and powerful medium to express their views, ideas and dreams.
