KMB 'wish list' tackles ambitious projects
September 18th, 2013
[by David Armstrong]
Keep Motueka Beautiful has finalised its "wish list" budget for the 2013-14 year, and aims to use these beautification projects to persuade TDC to carry over unspent funds to pay for them.
Last month we reported that KMB could lose $14,500 that had been held over in the Motueka Reserve Financial Contributions (RFC) account but not spent because some past projects had fizzled out.
At its September meeting on Monday the KMB committee decided to re-apply for those funds, along with its normal annual application, but ensure that the money if received would go to projects that could be carried out during the current financial year.
This resulted in a budget which the group would use, assuming a total of $25,000 was available. The project list coincides neatly with the project strategy the committee had earlier agreed on, and generally matches the policy that RFC funds can be spent on capital projects (not maintenance) in TDC reserves and TDC-administered land that is used for recreational purposes.
The agreed proposal for a 2013/14 budget was:
- Stage 1 of the beautification of the Port Motueka area - 6,000
- Continuation of the Estuary wetlands development - 1,000
- Plant maintenance beside existing walkways along Wharf Road, Motueka Quay, Adopt-a-Plots etc - $3000
- Development of a culvert and reclamation area at the Adopt-a-Plots - $1000
- Three town welcoming entrance signs - $2,500
- Maintenance of various garden plots - $500
- New area plantings in Thorp's Bush - $1,000
- Donation to Out Town Motueka's hanging baskets project - $1,000
- Tree planting along High Street from the roundabout - $4,000
- Design and replanting of the roundabout (already done) - $3,000
- Donation to Vision Motueka murals - $2,000
The first project on the list remains the top priority for the group. (See our earlier reports in June and in April.) This proposal has been on hold for several reasons, including current use of the area as a log landing, uncertainty over availability of funds, and need for agreement over obtaining landscape architect assistance.
The next step will be to obtain a draft landscape plan as a basis for discussing options with the various sections of Council with responsibilities for the Port Motueka - Quays - Beach Reserve area. Riverside's Che Vincent will be engaged to draw up a landscape concept plan for the area as a basis for further discussion with TDC officials.
The committee noted that the landscaping and planting of the roundabout at the town's southern entrance has been completed, after about eight years of efforts to get this project done. There are spare plants and mulch left over, and therefore an opportunity to do further planting around the nearby estuary edge.
