Arts Council planning for another year's work

February 18th, 2013

The Winter Workshops, run for the Motueka Arts Council by coordinator Jane Wells, saw a record high in 2012 for the number of workshops as well as attendances.

This will be part of the reports of all the activities and the financial balance of the Arts Council, which will be given at its annual general meeting in the Highland Pipe Band Rooms, Old Wharf Road, on Tuesday February 26th at 7.30pm.

The workshops are a valuable part of learning new skills for both rural and urban residents of the Tasman District. Planning starts soon for the 2013 workshop series.

The general public are invited to attend the council's AGM and suggest ideas for events to be planned for the next 18 months. If interested anyone can be part of the council.

"You don't have to be an 'artist' to be on the Motueka Arts Council, just interested in community art projects," said the chairwoman, Shirley Frater.

Membership of the Motueka Arts Council is free. The council relies on grants for all projects so there are no sausage sizzles or fund raising stalls by council members to worry about.

In September last year the Welcome for the Godwits and other activities along the Motueka foreshore was another activity the council undertook. And this year council will be participating in the Children's Day activities on Saturday March 2nd from 10am to 1pm at the Kumaras on the beginning of the Sand Spit, encouraging people to make sand and driftwood sculptures. It promises to be a fun day for people of all ages, adults included.

The Motueka Arts Council is switching to a shorter reporting time of 6 months, with the reporting year ending to December 31st. Shirley says the calendar year will allow better information to be given on the annual financial status.
