Highway underpass mural well advanced
September 16th, 2013
Work is well advanced on decorating the highway underpass for cyclists at Tasman village with a mural depicting local flora and fauna. (See our earlier story here.)
In a true community effort, locals have been cleaning up the approach, walls and ceiling, and organisers believe another week should wrap it up.
Co-ordinator and local professional artist Adi Tait says there are still birds to paint if anyone is interested. The project gained a little funding from TDC and some discount paints from Guthrie Bowron in Motueka, but otherwise it has been entirely a community effort.
Most cyclists exploring the Great Taste trail will travel from Mapua and Ruby Bay to Tasman village, then under the highway bypass to reach Harley Road and cross country to Riverside and Lower Moutere. "We are looking forward to when the tunnel will go into full use with the cycle trail passing through here," says Adi.
In the photos below, Tony and Vivienne Pearson are shown helping out.
