Imagine Youth Theatre tackles 'surreal' comedy

January 16th, 2013

Imagine Youth Theatre is tackling New Zealand playwright Angie Farrow's surreal comedy 'Amnesia' for its summer production which opens in two weeks.

The self-directed cast has been in rehearsal for the last six weeks and chose this play because they felt it was a good challenge. "It's thought-provoking, metaphysical, funny and light," said one of the performers, Lucy Holyoake.

Because the script really didn't give any background to the characters the cast have created their own back stories. A murderer, artist, failed business woman, a stud, philosopher and psychoanalyst are among the characters who find themselves in a surreal world with no recollection of who they are or how they got there.

The performers say they have learnt a lot from the self-directing process, especially in terms of stage positioning, lighting, costumes, organisation and the actual selection of plays. They agree that while the play is more suitable for a mature audience, it offers something for all ages.

The set will be a haphazard mix of items from different periods, with the characters putting memories to objects. Costuming will also be unconventional.

Many of the cast have been regular performers for Imagine Theatre. Their staging of the play at this time of year is the result of an opportunity to do one last show together before most head away next month to university.

Lucy Holyoake portrays Mary May the murderer, with Aedan Fenemor as Sebastion Lush, the artist. Alice Perks-Hoult portrays Liz Layton (the failed business woman), Harry Townsend (Dane Darling, the stud), Mikaela Hight (Jacqueline Le Coq, the philosopher), Anna-Kate Goodall (Heide Fritz, the psychoanalyst), Rachel Templeton (Indigo Singh, the matron) and Emma Perks-Hoult (God).

'Amnesia' by Imagine Youth Theatre will play at Imagine Theatre, Woodland Avenue, Thursday, January 31, 7pm, Friday, February 1, 7pm, Saturday, February 2, 7pm; Sunday, February 3, 7pm. Tickets are available from Floral Affaire, High Street.
