Get Safe continues as merged anti-violence service

July 15th, 2013
[by David Armstrong]

Get Safe Motueka, the service providing support for families affected by domestic and other violence, has merged with Stopping Violence Services Nelson to offer an expanded range of programmes.

The combined agency is named SVS-Living Safe to reflect the expansion into Motueka, following the winding up of Get Safe Motueka at the end of June.

The new Board of Trustees of SVS-Living Safe is to celebrate its move into the Motueka area, and its new service name, with a ceremony on July 31st at its recently acquired home at the Jack Inglis Friendship Hospital complex.

The vision of the organisation is for all people in our community to be living free of violence. Toward this they provide a variety of services for everyone in the Nelson/Tasman region affected by violence. specifically:

  • Men: Educational programmes (day and evening, group or individual) for men currently in a violent relationship or have caused or experienced violence in the past; to provide skills and education to break the cycle.
  • Women: A flexible smorgasbord of educational programmes, delivered either one-on-one or in small groups. These services are all designed for women past or existing relationships characterised by violence and/or abuse (in all its forms).
  • Family Whanau support: Long term individual intervention to families to address violence to ensure their children's safety.
  • Youth support: In Motueka they work with youth, aged primarily 14-16, with needs around violent behaviour, anger, family and relationships and self-motivation.
  • Youth programmes: The under8teen programme for those acting violently toward parents/caregivers, siblings and others. Delivered 1:1, it allows young people to explore the difference between anger and violence, why they use violence and to give them skills to create healthy, non-violent paths.
  • Parenting Education: Aimed at parents/care-givers with young people on the under8teen programme, or who need support to manage behaviour of their young people.
  • Counselling: For men and women, provides opportunities for individuals to explore aspects of their lives, including their experiences of childhood violence and abuse, where such continues to impact on their well-being, safety and relationships.

The variety of programmes allows for interventions that promote and teach skills to enhance family and other relationships and to keep children safe.
