Motueka Community Worker Rob Francis is standing for the Tasman District Council. Mr Francis, 59, announced yesterday that he is standing as an independent for the Motueka Ward in the October elections.

He is nominated by Motueka residents Tracey Andersen and Una Stephens. Currently Mr Francis works in the role of Environmental Education Officer for Tasman District Council.

Rob said he wanted to "give back" to the community, and use his governance and financial management experience, and environmental knowledge, to work for the future of Motueka and Tasman District.

In Motueka, Rob has worked formerly with Te Awhina Marae, Fresh FM, Get Safe Motueka, Riverside Community and Motueka High School.

"I feel a sense of urgency. The financial and environmental challenges are there for us all to see, for Tasman and Motueka.

"The impact of climate change and extreme weather means we need to be smart about our infrastructure, where and what we build, and what we can afford!

"Ultimately it is about keeping our families safe, from things like major flooding and sickness caused by human and animal waste in our waterways," emphasised Rob.

Rob said that local areas of concern are the viability of the Motueka Wastewater plant and the Motueka stopbanks. "Our democracy means that Council works for the people, and this means being open to new ideas and ways of doing things," said Rob. "Good communication between Council and the community is crucial to the future sustainability of Tasman District."

Rob is keen for the Council to support new and affordable housing initiatives in the District. "In Motueka and across Tasman we need affordable homes that are warm and efficient to run, and are good for the environment and the health of our tamariki (children).

"I want to be part of an effective and efficient Council that listens, that is financially viable and well managed, and able to deliver great outcomes for the people and environment of Motueka and Tasman District."
