The improvements to the road to Kaiteriteri and beyond are to progress now an agreement between the adjacent landowners and the Council is complete.
The Pukekoikoi (Turner’s Bluff) section of the road from Riwaka to the holiday mecca of Kaiteriteri and the Abel Tasman National Park was recognised as a geotechnical risk in 2009 due to its coastal location and underlying Separation Point granite.
Since that time it has been operating under controlled conditions following minor slips and a narrowing of the road, with the Council and community looking for long term solutions to the road’s layout and construction.
The need for a sustainable solution to the increasing traffic on this road, particularly over the summer months, has only become more pressing while the options were investigated and necessary negotiations took place.
During the initial investigation, and preliminary work on one such solution in early 2012, a historic pa site was discovered causing a complete review of the route and it associated construction.
In association with Historic Places Trust, Iwi, and the landowners, the Council has struck an agreement to allow the construction of the road to go ahead on an alternative alignment, as well as the creation of a nationally significant historic site.
This agreement has seen a compromise from all parties to enable this important project to move forward, said Tasman District Council’s CEO Lindsay McKenzie.
“The multiple interests involved in the project made an already complex roading issue even more so. Without the willingness to find a solution by all the parties concerned, we would still be round the table placing the long term access to this coastal treasure at risk.”
“We should thank all the parties involved for their perseverance and efforts to ensure we got to a solution.”
Construction on the new two-lane road through Pukekoikoi, taking account of the challenging terrain and the interests of all parties involved, will begin before Christmas as part of a wider programme of works on the road from Riwaka, with completion in the first half of 2014.
