Cruise ship pays visit to Kaiteriteri
February 13th, 2013
[by Terry Frater and friends]
The first cruise ship in at least a decade visited Kaiteriteri yesterday, leading to a busy time for local water operators ferrying tourists to parts of the national park.
The German ship, Europa, arrived mid-morning in warm but cloudy conditions and an early shower. Some passengers had alighted at Nelson to travel by bus to the Suter Gallery, WOW and Hoglund Art Glass and then on to Kaiteriteri to link up with the ship there.
A high king tide and almost flat calm, which greeted the ship at Kaiteriteri, made for perfect landings on the beach as the several zodiacs, bearing such names as Kiel, Singapore, New York, Manila, Sydney, Acapulco and Papeete, ferried passengers from the ship to shore.

From there they were subsequently taken on board by local-operated tourist vessels and headed for Abel Tasman National Park. Our lovely beach was looking its best for its visitors who numbered about 400, and it was also a great sight for us locals to see such a large ship and operation in our waters.
Two who came ashore for a break were the ship's entertainers, Marc Clear, an acclaimed performer of Europe stage musicals, and Marysol Ximenez-Carrillo, a musical stage performer. They said the tour was an opportunity for them to see the world and take a break from their theatre work in Germany, on an all expenses paid trip.
They have been entertaining a lot of elderly millionaires, but were enjoying getting off the ship onto Kaiteriteri beach and going for a walk before getting back to practise for a big concert tonight.
The floating visit was part of the ship's 3-week New Zealand tour.
