Beanie competition a highlight of winter festival
August 12th, 2013
The Motueka Arts Council held a very successful "Make a beanie" competition as part of the Festival of Light this year, with 44 entries by 22 designers featuring.
Work on entries began in May (see our story here) to create beanies using felting, sewing, knitting or crocheting methods. One entry had a recycling theme, using stitching to secure the used tea bags to a base.
The beanies, under seven categories, were subsequently displayed in the windows of retailers on the High Street.
Two staff from Abel Tasman Outdoors modeled the one of story book characters, Sesame Street's Bert & Ernie, made by Shirley Wallace. Her felted beanie won the "Fun to see" special award.
