Church group goes overboard with Big Beach Cleanup
November 11th, 2013
[by Malcolm Garrett]
St Peter Chanel Parish families were again right behind efforts to present a tidy beachfront to our visitors this year.
Last year they took on the shoreline of Jackett Island, and they returned to it this year in good numbers. More than 27 actively patrolled sections of the island, and they were supported by a team of dinghy operators, led by Islanders Gail Jewell and Justin Bowne.
Everyone wore lifejackets to get across from near the fishing pier, despite it only being about 30 metres at low tide. An 8.30am start to catch the low tide did not deter the seekers. Kerry Hay organised a four-wheeler and trailer to pick up sacks of rubbish and got teams easy access to the far end of the Island.
Young Henry Roberts found a pig's head [bones only], and was resolutely carrying it home. No doubt his mum will have ideas about the future of that bit of detritus!
An amazing variety of rubbish found its way onto the trailer to go to the depot at DOC, including a large section of insulation panel, the short end of a fishing rod, and a canoe paddle.
Organiser Janice Gravett of DOC pronounced herself well-pleased with the efforts of all who joined a team. Thanks go to Brian McNabb for carting the full trailer to the depot, and to all who took part, young and old. And when I say old, that would be nearly 80 years, and the youngest about 8.
