Al fresco summer movie a popular drawcard

January 10th, 2013
[by David Armstrong]

Around 70 people (it's hard to count in the dark) packed into the surrounds of the Jester House restaurant last night to enjoy a "golden oldie" movie in balmy conditions.

This was one of about 20 screenings of Summer Movies Al Fresco put on by Nelson Festivals, the next one being tonight at Motueka's Decks Reserve.

Last night's movie was High Society, a 1950s love/comedy/musical starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra and the wonderful Louis Armstrong jazz band. Tonight's movie will be an Elvis Presley classic, Jailouse Rock.

The event series is partly funded by the local councils with the rest being made up from a $2 entry charge. Movies start at around 9pm by which time the pictures were easily seen

The quality of the screen was excellent, with a large screen dominating the north-western corner of Jester House's gardens providing a clear image that was unruffled by occasional gusts of wind, and a solid sound system. Viewers brought their own deck chairs, rugs and nibbles.

A good round of applause at the end showed the audience appreciated the movie (with its amusingly dated social attitudes), the company and the effort behind creating the outdoor movie experience.
