Large crowd celebrates Starlight Parade

December 8th, 2013
[by David Armstrong]

One of the best ever, and certainly the best attended in recent years, the New World Starlight Parade got a large section of Motueka's residents out on Friday for a party event.

Warm, humid and calm weather, plus the hour ealier start to the parade itself, meant that after the 40 floats had strolled and driven the length of central High Street, there was time and energy for onlookers and participants to wander around the entertainments for another hour.

This year's event organiser Peter Garlick had some nervous moments during the rainy days leading up to the parade, but in the end the weather could not have been more ideal.

Wallace Street had the usual spread of food stalls and an entertainment stage, with a few community groups also setting up stalls to sell wares and promote their activities.

Many of the parade floats showed the results of many hours of work to interpret the nautical theme. Below are photos of a selection of them. These are followed by some other photos of related activities.

The winning floats were:
Overall Best Sea Theme - the Riwaka Scouts, Cubs and Keas.
The Friends and Family prize - the Polak family.
Best Community Float - the Family Service Centre.
Best School prize - Rudolf Steiner School.
Best Business entry - Lynne Painter's Motueka and Brightwater Zumba classes.
