The big overseas experience is very much a part of Kiwi culture, with thousands each year departing for the four corners of the globe.
Reflecting this, next week a group of travelling Kiwis will be brought to the local stage when Imagine Theatre presents the adult comedy 'The Big O.E.'
Trudy and Tracy are setting out across Europe on their way home from London in the 1970s. Along the way they meet Tronk an ex-pat poet/tour guide; Jean and Gracie two conservative middle-aged sisters; Sharlene, a loud-mouthed Australian kleptomaniac, and Phillipa, a shady former lover.
They are caught up in situations that only the gullible and overly romantic would find themselves. They will, for various reasons, have the adventure of a lifetime.
Director Murray Owen says this version differs from the original script, not only because of adding local content, but because of having more available female actors compared to male actors.
"But we turned this to advantage and it has given some of the actors further scope and the script more edge," he suggested. "The scenes build up to a great finish where again we've added our own mayhem and madness."
Murray believes there's a need for more adult theatre which provides a fun night out for patrons. 'The Big O.E' should go a long way towards filling the void. And the audience is certain to leave on a high - think 1970s.
'The Big O.E.' features Robyn Langridge as Trudy, Molly Dyer (Tracy), Halina Horn (Sharlene), Helen Mayhew (Gracie), Emma Ryder (Jean), Anneliese Goemaere (Phillipa), Ben Whitten (Tronk), Tahi Richards (Stavros) and Claudia Manderson (French waitress).
'The Big O.E.' plays at Imagine Theatre October 16 - 19, 7.30pm each night. Tickets available Amcal Pharmacy. Door sales.
