Council election nominees in short supply so far

August 8th, 2013

Will there be enough people to fill the positions available on the Tasman District Council and Motueka Community Boards? Well time is running out for candidates to decide.

With only a small number of nominations received and a closing date of midday next Friday August 16th, Tasman's Electoral Officer Sandra Hartley is urging all aspiring candidates to get their papers in.

"Expectations have been high with in excess of 50 information packs picked up since the nomination period opened but this expectation has not been met with the low number of completed nomination forms returned," says Sandra in a press release.

"So far the Council has only received two nominations for Mayor, five for the 13 Councillor positions and two for the Motueka Community Board.

"While it would be easy to take comfort that in the past the majority of nominations are delivered in the last week, we are urging people not to leave it to the last minute.

"There are a small number of legal requirements to ensure a nomination is valid, and if there is something wrong or missing from the form there is no ability to grant an extension and the opportunity to represent your community is gone."

Anyone wishing to stand as an elected member must be nominated by two people enrolled in the district or ward the candidate wishes to stand, pay a deposit of $200 and to enhance their chances they should provide a photo and a 150 word profile.
