Motueka 'time bank' ready to begin operation
November 7th, 2013
An alternative currency called COSH will be launched next week by a group living in the Motueka area who have created a system for trading services through a community time bank.
The launch, to which all interested or curious people are invited, will be used to explain what a time bank is. It will be held at the Motueka Community House at 7.30pm, on Wednesday November 13th.
During the evening the organisers will be talking about wider economic issues currently afflicting the world - why it is harder these days to make ends meet and why there’s never enough money around.
"This evening is designed to help illuminate the reasons why and provide a grass roots solution by developing an alternative currency called COmmunity SHares or COSH," said the organisers. "Our slogan is ‘Motueka Time Bank – create COSH to bypass CASH!’."
The guest speaker will be Matt Slater, who has come from Europe and is very knowledgeable about the issues afflicting the world and alternatives that are available.
He is the creator of ‘Community Forge’, which is a free web-based program that the Motueka group is using to create the local time bank. He will speak on our current monetary system and will introduce people to Time Banking and the way hours can be used as currency instead of dollars.
Those who are interested will be able to join the Time Bank on the spot and start trading straight away.
