Litter cart returns to the streets
February 7th, 2013
The litter cart operation is operating again in the Motueka central business district, with Nolan Duff (pictured right) starting as the operator on January 9th.
The contract is for two hours a day, four days weekly for 12 months. The hourly rate is $13.50. Funding is from Motueka Lionesses ($2,000) and the Community Board’s $5,000 from its Special Projects fund.
The administrative details were sorted out for the Community Board with assistance from Naomi Winslade of Workbridge and John Murphy, Accountant, and Treasurer of Our Town Motueka.
The initial litter collecting areas are shown on the map, right, and follow these particular places:
- Thorp’s Bush and the area from Woodlands Avenue to Tudor Street (excluding the New World car park) and east to Taylor Avenue, the area from Whakarewa Street west to Manoy Street and along High Street to the Tudor Street intersection (excluding Warehouse, KFC and McDonalds car parks).
- Tudor Street to Greenwood Street (east of High Street), Wallace Street, i-SITE, Decks Reserve, Kiyosato Gardens.
- Laneways from High Street (east and west sides), Whitwells car park, Museum.
- Pah Street to Poole Street and north of Greenwood Street, Library, Memorial Hall, Senior Citizens and Memorial Park. Laneway to Poole Street, High Street north of Pah/Greenwood intersection, Greenwood Street car park (excluding Countdown car park).
Already there have been favourable comments from residents, says board chairman David Ogilvie.
"I was with Nolan at the Kiyosato Gardens and a Motueka woman approached and expressed her appreciation for the work. There are similar comments to Nolan, almost daily."
David adds that the volume of litter is surprising - at least a 120 litre bag per week, not including glass, cans and plastic which Nolan is endeavouring to keep separate.
Scott’s “Hire-a-Bin” is collecting the results, as a voluntary gesture, and John Murphy and Associates are administering the wages, also on a voluntary basis.
David says the active support from Our Town Motueka and from the Motueka Lionesses is appreciated. This has been essential for the project to actually happen.
