Cycle trail coastal route to Motueka chosen
May 5th, 2013
The planned cycle trail from Mapua to Motueka will now follow a predominantly coastal route, because access could not be gained through private properties, according to a report in the Nelson Mail.
The article in yesterday's paper said TDC's cycle trail project manager, Dugald Ley, said negotiations with landowners on the preferred route - from Higgs Reserve through Chaytor Track and up to Tasman View Rd - had reached an impasse.
He and the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust have recommended that the trail follow a route from Mapua to Tasman via the Ruby Bay shoreline, Pinehill Rd, Marriages Rd, Aporo Rd and through Tasman village to Lower Moutere via Harley Rd, Tasman View Rd and Community Rd.
Mr Ley said the route would have the same estimated $817,000 price tag as the inland option. It would also pass more cafes and communities and provide a greater potential economic benefit, he said.
Once the route was confirmed, the trust could move to arrange construction, he said. It was envisaged that the route would be available to cyclists by December this year.
The paper also reported that Trust project manager Stuart Hughes said it had the money to get the trail through Motueka and as far as Turner's Bluff, on the Kaiteriteri Rd, this year. Previous estimates that the trail would reach Kaiteriteri by June would not be met.
