Steiner School to hold autumn harvest fair
March 5th, 2013
Motueka Rudolf Steiner School will hold its first ever Autumn Fair on Saturday April 6th, to celebrate the region's summer of abundance and have fun with a "Saint Michael and the Dragon" theme.
Fairgoers will be able to warm up by a bonfire, taste toffee apples, harvest soups and other treats; make dragons and corn husk dolls, construct dragon scales, try sword-fighting, buy harvest produce and natural crafts and be entertained by talented locals.
"And if you've ever wanted to burn a dragon - for a good cause - this is your chance," says organiser Fabienne Ussher.
He says the fair's theme is based on the tale of the Catholic Saint who slayed a dragon in heaven. "This is an opportunity to experience a school fair with a difference, and help us fundraise for our running costs, as we don't receive government funding.
"Come enjoy the magical atmosphere, experience the bonfire in the evening, and conquer your inner dragon. It will be a spectacular sight!"
The fair will be held at the school's current leased home, the old maternity hospital at 480 High Street, just north of TOAD Hall. The hospital, which saw the births of many local babies over the years, has nurtured the growing school which started 10 years ago.
The hospital lease expires in November 2015, so the school is also fundraising for and actively seeking a new home in the Motueka area.
"Autumn is a time to celebrate the end of summer, enjoy abundance, and prepare for the dormancy of winter and re-birth of spring," says Fabienne.
Stalls and activities include the bonfire, harvest market stall, dragon making, corn dolls, dragon scales and autumn leave deco, burn your inner dragon, sword fighting, slingshot, hay rides, visit Mother Earth, entertainments, apple cake raffle, craft stalls including Midnight Elves, felted creations and local crafts people presenting their trades.
The fair will be held on April 6th from 1pm till 6pm, and entry is by gold. Inquiries to Fabienne Ussher: .
